Marseille-Provence 2013, European Capital of Culture, will be a meeting point for culture, politics and the economy. The people of Marseille are famous for showing their differences, staging their disagreements and glorifying their contradictions. Being the European Capital of Culture is a revolution to be shared with everybody. Regional stakeholders have been mobilised around a cultural project that will unfold all year long, transforming the mosaic into a coherent picture. As you can imagine, this was no easy task. Uniting the Roman ruins of Arles, the medieval buildings of Salon-de-Provence, the industrial zones of Istres and Martigues, the cultural centre of Aix-en-Provence, the clay sector of Aubagne and the Greek heritage of Marseille was a real challenge. However, this is the miracle that represents Marseille-Provence 2013 – a unique journey through history, reality, desires and projects.

Marseille Provence, make yourself at home.

As European Capital of Culture this year, Marseille will be the stage for various cultural events during the MEMC congress. Some of the highlights will be:

  • 7 to 9 September: "Un Piano à la Mer" (open-air piano concert at the beach), plage des Catalans.
  • 13 June-13 October: "Le Grand Atelier du Midi". Joint exhibition from Van Gogh to Bonnard, Musée des Beaux Arts, Palais Longchamp
  • 7, 8 and 11 September: "Laissez-Vous Mener en Bateau" (seabound circus show).
